The History of the First World Cup in 1930

 

The 2022 World Cup in Qatar will soon be held from November 21 to December 18, 2022. This edition of the World Cup will be the first World Cup to be held in winter because summer in Qatar will be very hot. This World Cup will be the last time with 32 countries because, in 2026, the World Cup will be participated by 48 countries. The Qatar World Cup will be the 22nd edition and for the second time being held in the Asian region twenty years ago, it was held in South Korea and Japan.

The World Cup itself was first held in 1930 in Uruguay or 26 years after FIFA was founded. Before the World Cup, the world football tournament was held as one of the sports of the Summer Olympics.

The first World Cup was held by FIFA in 1930. Uruguay was chosen because it had just won football at the Summer Olympics. All matches are played in the City of Montevideo, some at the Centenario Stadium. In this inaugural edition, the World Cup was attended by 13 countries consisting of 7 South American countries, 4 European countries, and two others from North American countries.

The first two matches were held simultaneously, namely France, who beat Mexico 4-1, and the United States, who beat Belgium 3-0. French player Lucien Laurent became the first player to score the first goal in World Cup history.



In this first edition, participants were entered without a qualifying round and some were invited directly by FIFA. A total of 13 countries accepted FIFA's invitation, but many European countries refused because the trip to South America was far away. No Asian and African countries took part in this first tournament. The new African country appeared in the 1934 edition represented by Egypt and the first Asian country appeared in the 1938 edition in France represented by the Dutch East Indies.

The 13 teams were divided into 4 groups and the following are the participating teams.

Group 1

Group 2

  1. Yugoslavia
  2. Brazil
  3. Bolivia

Group 3

  1. Uruguay
  2. Romania
  3. Peru

Group 4

  1. United States of America
  2. Paraguay
  3. Belgium

The group winners will immediately advance to the semifinals. The four countries that qualified for the semifinals were Argentina, the United States, Uruguay, and Yugoslavia. Argentina managed to beat the US with a score of 6-1 and host Uruguay beat Yugoslavia also with a score of 6-1.

The final was held on 30 July 1930 at the Centenario Stadium and was attended by more than 68,000 spectators. Uruguay came out as champions after completing the Argentine resistance, 4-2. Making Uruguay the first World Cup champion and July 30 was made an important national day in the country.
